ALLENDALE, Mich.—The Grand Valley State baseball team returns to it's home field for the first time in two weeks on Wednesday, when it hosts a GLIAC doubleheader with GLIAC North Division leader Northwood University. The twinbill is the first of two the teams will play in a week, with the other doubleheader scheduled to take place in Midland next Wednesday.
Â
The Lakers (14-10-1) come into the homestand off of a split with Wayne State University on Monday afternoon, a re-scheduled pair of games from the weekend prior that was postponed due to weather. The games were played at Davenport University's athletic complex.
Â
In the first game, the Lakers fell behind 2-0 in the first inning, and after scoring one run to cut the lead in half, saw the Warrior lead swell to 5-1 in the fourth inning. The Lakers seized control of the game in the fifth inning, however, scoring seven runs in a decisive go-ahead inning. The runs would be decisive, as the Lakers closed out a 9-6 win after a scoreless ninth inning from closer
Matt Williams, his eighth of the season.
Â
In the second inning, the Lakers struck first, taking a 2-0 lead off of an RBI double by
Jason Ribecky, but failed to get much else going, suffering their worse loss of the season, 16-3.
Â
Wednesday's twinbill will be the first matchup between the Timberwolves and the Lakers this season, but the 155
th time overall that the two programs will meet, with GVSU having won 115 of the matchups, compared to Northwood's 39 wins. Last season, the Lakers took three of four from the Timberwolves.
Â
Northwood will bring the sixth highest scoring offense in the GLIAC into the matchup, while GVSU is ranked eighth. The Lakers hold the slightest of margins in batting average .295-.293, while Northwood holds a 10 point advantage in on-base-percentage, partially due to their 109 team walks, the third highest mark in the conference.
Â
In pitching, the Lakers have accrued the third lowest earned run average in the conference, at 4.90, while the Timberwolves sit at sixth, with a 5.34 average. Both teams excel at not issuing free passes via the walk, as the Timberwolves and the Lakers are one and two in the conference in walks issued, respectively (80-81).
Â
With a quick turnaround from Monday's doubleheader, and two more doubleheaders on the weekend, the Lakers will look to display a more consistent effort on both sides of the ball as they continue through the grueling GLIAC schedule.Â
