WESTFIELD, Ind.—The Grand Valley State baseball team split a pair of games on Sunday at the Midwest Regional Baseball Crossover to close out the event in Westfield, Indiana. The Lakers defeated Drury 6-5 in the morning opener before dropping a close decision to Missouri S & T in the afternoon, 7-5. The loss snapped GVSU's three game winning streak dating back to March 14
th's victory against Rockhurst, and moves the Lakers to 9-7-1 on the season with GLIAC play right around the corner.
The victory against Drury required late inning heroics from junior
Matt Williams, when Drury scored four runs in the top of the seventh to take the lead, 5-4 after trailing GVSU 4-1 after the third inning. With the Lakers trailing by one entering the bottom of the seventh, Williams blasted a two run home run over the left field wall, scoring
Keith Browning and giving GVSU the lead at 6-5.
Tim Tarter (2-1) earned the win on the mound after coming on in relief in the seventh inning. He allowed one run in two innings pitched, walking none and striking out two, Williams then entered the game and pitched a scoreless ninth inning, striking out two, to seal the victory.

GVSU would score solo runs in both the sixth and seventh innings to climb within two, 5-3, before Missouri S & T scored again in the bottom of the seventh to make the score 6-3. Another Miner run in the eighth inning would make the score 7-3, and the Lakers would need four runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to attempt a rally.
GVSU loaded the bases, and
Johnny Nate and
Alex Young both came around to score on an error by the Miners, but the rally would fall short and the Lakers would lose by a final margin of 7-5.
