Lakers Open GLIAC Play with 7-2 Win Over Hillsdale

HILLSDALE, Mich. – In the first conference match of the season for both teams, 46th-ranked Grand Valley State was victorious in a 7-2 decision over Hillsdale at the Biermann Center at the Hillsdale College campus. GVSU improves their record to 7-4 and 1-0 against GLIAC opponents, while the Chargers drop to 4-3 overall and 0-1 in the conference.
 
Grand Valley State, also ranked fifth in the Midwest Region, won two of three doubles matches to jump out to an early lead. Sebastien Lescoulie/Jack Heiniger won match No. 2 (8-4), and Andrew Bole/Nicholas Urban took match No. 3 (8-2) to put the Lakers up 2-1 entering singles play.
 
The Lakers rode a 5-1 performance in singles competition to take the conference-opening match. Alex van de Steenoven won match one (7-6 (7-1), 6-3), while Lescoulie won match three (6-1, 6-1), Heiniger took match four (6-1, 6-2), Bole won match five (6-0, 2-6, 10-5), and Urban won match six (6-1, 6-0).
 
Grand Valley State faces a quick turnaround when they travel to Ohio to take on Findlay on Sunday (Mar. 20) at 10 am.
