HOUGHTON, Mich. – The Grand Valley State women's tennis team kicked off their 2015-16 season with a commanding 8-1 victory over GLIAC opponent Michigan Tech at the Gates Tennis Center.

Coming off a 2014-15 season that saw them place second in the 2014 GLIAC Tournament and make their 15th consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance, GVSU starts the new season off on the right foot after seeing six freshmen replace six key contributors from last year's squad. With the 2015-16 team comprised of only sophomores and freshmen, this year's roster will be one of the youngest in the program's long history.

The Lakers jumped out to an early 2-1 advantage in doubles play by winning the No. 1 and No. 3 matches.

Abby Perkins pulled out an 8-3 victory from the third position.

GVSU locked up their first win of the season by going a perfect six-for-six in singles action. Not a single match required a third set, with Perkins winning the most one-sided match of the day (6-2, 6-3). Freshmen Christmen and
Madison Ballard picked up their first collegiate singles wins, with Christman winning 7-5, 6-1 at the No. 4 position and Ballard winning 6-2, 6-4 from the six-spot.

The Lakers return to the courts on Sunday (Sept. 6) at 10 am when they travel to Sault Ste. Marie in a conference match against Lake Superior State.
