ALLENDALE, Mich. – The Grand Valley State men's tennis team upset No. 22 Northwood, 5-4, in the final home match of the season for the Lakers. The Lakers improve to 13-4 overall and 6-1 in the conference with the win, while the highly-ranked Timberwolves fall to 10-4 overall and 5-2 in the GLIAC.
The Lakers started off the match by taking two of the three doubles matches. The No. 1 pairing of
Francis Bertrand/
Bryan Hodges won their match 8-6, and the No. 2 pairing of
Zach Phillips/
Alex van de Steenoven won convincingly, 8-3. Although
Jack Heiniger/
Andrew Bole dropped the No. 3 match, they pushed their opponent to the limits before eventually losing 9-7.
GVSU went 3-3 in singles action, giving the Lakers the necessary three points to pull off the upset. Claiming wins for GVSU were
Francis Bertrand (6-4, 7-5) at No. 1 singles,
Alex van de Steenoven (7-6 [7-4], 6-3) in the No. 3 spot and
Bryan Hodges (4-6, 6-2, 6-3) at No. 5 singles, giving Grand Valley State three points and the overall match win.
Men's tennis closes out their regular season on the road against Ohio Dominican on Saturday (Apr. 18) and Walsh on Sunday (Apr. 19).
