Lakers Upset Timberwolves, Move On to GLIAC Final

MIDLAND, Mich. - Grand Valley State upset Northwood 5-2 in the semi-final of the 2014 GLIAC Women's Tennis Tournament Saturday afternoon. The Lakers now stand at 12-2 overall, while the Timberwolves fell to 12-2.

Third-seeded GVSU picked up two points in doubles play with #2 pairing Carola Orna/Alexa Sweeney taking an 8-5 decision and #3 doubles Aimee Moccia/Morgan Patterson winning 8-2. The team of Leah Dancz/Kali Phillips fell in the #1 spot (8-2), and the Lakers went into singles play leading second-seed Northwood by one.

In singles action, Dancz was victorious in the #1 spot (6-3, 6-1), while Orna picked up the win as the #3 single (6-3, 7-5), and Abby Perkins needed to go to a tiebreaker set in the #5 position (3-6, 6-2, 6-2) to get the necessary three points for the Laker win. Northwood was victorious in the #2 spot (7-6, 6-4), while the #4 and #6 single spots went unfinished.

Grand Valley State will face top-seeded Wayne State in the GLIAC Championship on Sunday, October 26, at 8:30 a.m. The two teams previously met on September 24 in Detroit, where the Warriors bested the Lakers in a tight 5-4 contest.
