ResultsBIG RAPIDS, Mich. - With the Fall portion of their schedule coming to a close, the Grand Valley State women's tennis team continued their winning ways with a 6-3 victory over Ferris State. The win gives the Lakers six straight wins, while it improves their overall and conference records to 10-1. Meanwhile, the loss drops Ferris state's overall record to 8-5 and their GLIAC mark to 7-5.
GVSU got off to a rocky start in singles play, dropping the first two matches before
Carola Orna won the first match of the contest for the Lakers (6-2, 5-7, 6-3). The Lakers and Bulldogs battled throughout much of the singles portion of the match, with four of the six matches going to a tiebreaker. Grand Valley State was able to reel off four straight victories in the singles bracket, with
Abby Perkins taking the easiest win of the afternoon (6-2, 6-0), and Orna,
Alexa Sweeney, and
Kelly Trapp winning in the tiebreaker of their matches.
In doubles play earlier in the contest, Grand Valley State dropped the first match but won the next two by the scores of 8-5 and 8-2 to take the match over host Ferris State.The pairing of Orna and Sweeney won their 10th doubles match of the season, while
Aimee Moccia and
Morgan Patterson won their 11th of the year.
Grand Valley State concludes the regular season portion of the Fall schedule with a road contest against Northwood on Sunday. The Lakers then head to Midland to compete in the 2014 GLIAC Championships from October 24 to October 26.
