Grand Valley State head women's wrestling coach, Jake Short, announced the appointment of Brian Gibbs as an assistant coach in the program effective immediately. Gibbs most recently was the head coach at Clarkston High School, a position he held since 2017. 

"We are excited to have a coach with Brian's coaching experience join our program," said Short. "Brian brings a wealth of experience in all facets of a program, while also providing an outstanding technical, physical and mental approach to the sport," added Short. 

Gibbs built Clarkston into a program that featured five individual State Champions, 38 all-state performers and three wrestlers that were four-time all-state honorees. As a team, the Wolves claimed six Michigan High School Athletic Association Division I Regional Championships and a semifinal appearance in 2025. Clarkston also garnered MHSAA Team Academic All-State plaudits six times during his tenure as head coach. 

"This is an incredible opportunity to join a program that is competing at the highest level in just its third season as a varsity sport," said Gibbs. "Jake has done an incredible job in a short period of time, and I just want to help enhance and build on what he has already put in place," added Gibbs.

Gibbs was an assistant wrestling coach at Olivet University from 2015-1017 after completing his wrestling career at Michigan State (2011-14) where he was a two-time Big 10 tournament representative for the Spartans.
