ALLENDALE, MICH. – Three members of the Grand Valley State men's golf team earned Golf Coaches Association of American All-American honors, as announced by the organization Friday morning.
Manuel Cue Vargas,
Bryce Wheeler, and
Andrew Gwilliams all were selected for their play this season.
For the second straight season, Cue was honored as an All-American, this time named to the second team after being an honorable mention selection last year. The senior carded 25 rounds of par or better, having a scoring average of 70.8, recording a low round of 65. He made 125 birdies and 10 eagles throughout the season. Cue earned the win at the Ken Partridge Invitational; one of seven top 10 finishes this season. Ranked 17
th nationally, Cue is the fourth golfer in program history to earn two All-American selections.
Earning his first All-American placement as a Laker,
Bryce Wheeler was named a Third-Team All-American. The GLIAC Golfer of the Year put together the best season of his career, recording six top 10 finishes, including wins at the UIndy Invitational, the Greenwood Invitational, and co-medalist honors at the GLIAC Championship. He carded 19 rounds of par or better, shooting a low round of 64. He sank 128 birdies and five eagles this year, shooting an average round of 71.02. Wheeler finished the season ranked 30
th in the country.
Saving his best season for his last season, senior
Andrew Gwilliams earned the first All-American honor of his Laker career, getting named an Honorable Mention. The First Team All GLIAC honoree totaled nine top 10 finishes, with four in the top five. He closed out the year ranked 37
th nationally, as he made 121 birdies and four eagles this season, shooting a low round of 66, which he did twice. His scoring average of 71.03 was third on the team, as he shot 22 rounds of par or below.
