Men's Golf Places Six On The GLIAC First-Team

ALLENDALE, MICH. – The GLIAC announced their men's golf all-conference honors, and for the first time in league history, one team made up the entirety of the first team. GVSU placed six members on the top team, with no other team represented. Bryce Wheeler was named the league's Golfer of the Year, and head coach Gareth Lappin was the Coach of the Year.
 
Grand Valley State head coach Gareth Lappin has been named GLIAC Men's Golf Coach of the Year for the first time in his career. In his third season at the helm in Allendale, Lappin has led the Lakers to one of their most successful seasons in program history. The Lakers won seven tournaments, including the GLIAC and Regional titles. They placed second at two other events as well. Under Lappin, six players earned First-Team All-Conference honors, with Bryce Wheeler earning Golfer of the Year. The Lakers are ranked fifth in the country as they head into next week's National Championships.
 
For the fifth straight season, a Grand Valley State men's golfer has been named GLIAC Golfer of the Year, with Bryce Wheeler taking home the honors this year. The senior put together the best season of his career, recording six top 10 finishes, including wins at the UIndy Invitational, the Greenwood Invitational, and co-medalist honors at the GLIAC Championship. He carded 18 rounds of par or better, shooting a low round of 64. He sank 119 birdies and five eagles this year, shooting an average round of 70.9. The First-Team All-GLIAC selection is currently ranked 26th in the country.  
 
Senior Manuel Cue Vargas was selected as a first-team all-conference for the third consecutive season. Ranked 24th in the country, Cue has carded 22 rounds of par or better, having a scoring average of 71, recording a low round of 65. He made 121 birdies and eight eagles throughout the season. Cue earned the win at the Ken Partridge Invitational; one of six top 10 finishes this season.
 
Earning the fourth All-GLIAC selection of his career, and the second first-team honor, was senior Charlie Cooley. Shooting an average of 71.9, with a low of 67, Cooley totaled 15 rounds of par or better. The winner of the Nemacolin Intercollegiate, he had four other top 10 placements and is ranked 53rd nationally. He made 98 birdies and three eagles over the course of the season.
 
Andrew Gwilliams broke out this season, putting together the best season of his career. The senior earned his first ever All-GLIAC selection after a year in which he totaled nine top 10 finishes, with four in the top five. He made 110 birdies and four eagles this season, shooting a low round of 66. His scoring average of 71.03 was third on the team, as he shot 20 rounds of par or below. Gwilliams is currently ranked 34th in the country.
 
Sophomore Ryan Gallagher was voted to his first All-GLIAC team, garnering first-team honors. The Novi, Michigan native was a co-medalist at the GLIAC Tournament, his first career victory. That was one of three top 10 placements for him this year. Ranked 74th nationally, Gallagher carded a low round of 66 as part of his 10 rounds of par or better. He made 70 birdies and one eagle, to shoot an average round of 71.7.
 
The sixth and final member of the first team was Maverick Conaway. In his first season as a Laker, the junior set a new program record for an 18-hole score, shooting a 62 at the UIndy Invitational. He made 65 birdies and four eagles this year, carding an average score of 73. Conaway had three top 10 tournament endings throughout the season.
