ALLENDALE – The Grand Valley State men's basketball team had four players earn All-GLIAC honors announced by the league office today. The Lakers had one named to the first team, two player to the second team, and two all-defensive honorees, while
Trevor Smith Jr. was named the GLIAC Sixth Man of the Year.
Graduate forward
Ethan Alderink earned All-GLIAC first team honors. Alderink leads the Lakers in scoring averaging 13.5 points shooting 48% from the field and 40% from three. Alderink ranks second on the team grabbing 5.5 rebounds. He has posted two double doubles this season in wins at Parkside and vs Roosevelt. Alderink has scored in double figures in 21 games this season and scored a career high 28 points in the home opening win against Lewis. In conference play, Alderink leads the Lakers just over 13 points and has grabbed six rebounds.
Senior guard
Trevor Smith Jr. has been named the GLIAC Sixth Man of the Year. Smith Jr. is the second Laker in program history to earn sixth man of the year honors in the GLIAC. Smith Jr. also earned All-GLIAC second team and all-defensive honors. Smith Jr. and Northern Michigan's Dylan Kuehl become the third and fourth players in GLIAC history to be named to the All-Defensive team four times. The senior is averaging 12.3 points and leads the team shooting 51.8% from the field. Smith Jr. also leads the Lakers dishing out 92 assists for a 3.2 average. He scored a career high 21 points at Lake Superior State and a career high nine assists vs Davenport this season. Smith Jr. has scored in double figures in 23 games this season and currently ranks fifth in the country with a 3.17 assist/turnover ratio.
Senior forward
Jalen Charity has been named to the All-GLIAC second team for the second consecutive season. Charity is averaging a career best 12.5 points and five rebounds this season, shooting 46% from the field and 80% from the free throw line. The Grand Rapids native is second on the team with 22 blocks and third with 26 steals. He has scored in double figures in 23 games including five games scoring over 20 points. Chairty scored a career high 27 points in the overtime win at Ferris State and became the 36
th player in program history to score 1,000 career points.
Redshirt junior forward
Shamus Thompson has been named to the GLIAC all-defensive team for the second consecutive season. Thompson leads the Lakers grabbing 6.4 rebounds per game and blocking 31 shots. He has appeared in all 29 games making a career best 22 starts this season. Thompson has been named the GLIAC defensive player of the week two times this season. He grabbed a career high 15 rebounds while posting his first career double-double in the home win vs Purdue Northwest. This season, Thompson has notched double digit rebounds in five games and tied a career high 12 points in the win at Roosevelt.
