DETROIT, MICH. – The Grand Valley State women's basketball team fell in a close road matchup at Wayne State, dropping the contest 78-77. The loss moves them to 21-1 overall and 13-1 in GLIAC play.
The two teams traded baskets to begin the game, with GVSU holding a slim 12-10 lead. From there, the Warriors went on a 13-6 run to end the quarter, leading 23-18 after one quarter.
Wayne State continued their push into the second quarter, outscoring GVSU by 10 in the period, extending their lead up to 49-34 at the half. The Lakers chipped away at their deficit, getting it into single-digits late in the third quarter, but the Warriors ented the period on a 6-2 run, leading 66-53 heading into the fourth quarter.
In the fourth quarter, Wayne State pushed their lead up to 15 points before the Lakers started to make their comeback. They started with a 10-3 run, cutting it to 73-65 with just over two minutes to play. After the Warriors got it back to 10, GVSU scored eight straight points, then following a Warrior free throw,
Paige VanStee connected on a three to tie the game at 76.
Nicole Kamin eventually gave the Lakers the lead with a free throw, but the Warriors would knock down two free throws of their own to give them the final lead of the game.
Nicole Kamin led the way with a season-high 22 points, while
Paige VanStee tallied 21 points and eight rebounds.
Ava Scanlon posted 12 points and eight boards, while
MacKenzie Bisballe had 10 points and six rebounds.
