#3 Women's Basketball Defeats Roosevelt

ALLENDALE, MICH. – The Grand Valley State women's basketball team returned home for a Thursday night matchup against Roosevelt. After a close first half, GVSU pulled away in the second half to get back in the win column at 80-56. The Lakers are now 22-1 this season and 14-1 in league play. The win also marked the 300th win for head coach Mike Williams in his time in Allendale.
 
With Roosevelt holding a 5-4 lead, GVSU went on a 7-0 run to go up 11-5 midway through the first quarter. After having their lead cut to two points, Tayla Dillard hit an and-1 layup and free throw, followed by a three from Paige VanStee to put the Lakers back up by eight. RU scored the final bucket of the quarter, making the score 17-12 after one.
 
Grand Valley State saw their lead fade away over six minutes into the second quarter, as Roosevelt took a 24-23 lead. Mackenzie Bisballe answered with a personal 7-0 run, then Avery Lay scored three straight as part of a half-ending 10-3 run to help GVSU lead 33-27 at the half.
 
The Laker scoring run continued into the second half, starting with a 7-0 run to go up 40-27. Roosevelt battled back to within eight points late in the quarter, but GVSU got back up by double-digits to end the quarter up 54-44.
 
After RU got back within eight early in the fourth, the Lakers went on a 9-0 run to take a 17-point lead. That momentum continued through the rest of the quarter, with GVSU ending the game on a 13-2 scoring run to finish off the victory.
 
MacKenzie Bisballe tied her season-high with 22 points, hitting 9-10 from the field, adding six rebounds. Avery Lay totaled a career-high 17 points on 6-8 from the field. Paige VanStee had 11 points and five boards, with Ava Scanlon adding 10 points. Lexi Plitzuweit pulled down seven rebounds, dished out six assists, and scored five points. Roosevelt was held to 27.7% shooting from the field and 16.7% from distance.
