HAMMOND, IND. – The Grand Valley State women's basketball team kicked off a road weekend, heading down to Hammond, Indiana to take on Purdue Northwest. The top-ranked team in the country had no trouble with the Pride, cruising to a 91-44 victory. The Lakers are now 21-0 this season and 13-0 in GLIAC play.
After Purdue Northwest scored the first points of the game, the Lakers responded with an 11-0 run, nine of those points coming from
Paige VanStee. They never let the Pride back into the game, ending the quarter on an 11-2 run, leading 24-9 after the first quarter.
Grand Valley State extended their lead up to 18 points early in the second quarter. Over the next few minutes, Purdue Northwest chipped away at their deficit, cutting it down to as few as 11 at the 1:43 mark of the second. However, a quick six points from GVSU pushed their advantage up to 17 going into the break, up 43-26.
Beginning the second half, GVSU held PNW scoreless over the first 5:17 of play, extending their lead by eight during that timeframe. After five points from the Pride, the Lakers tallied the final 12 points of the period, getting two three-pointers from
Tayla Dillard, to lead 67-32 after three quarters.
Four straight points from
Anayya Davis opened the fourth quarter, starting a 13-2 Laker run, that saw triples from
Molly Anderson and
Avery Zeinstra. The Pride responded with eight consecutive points, but it was quickly answered by a game-ending 10-2 run, capping off a 48-point second half.
14 different Lakers scored in the game, led by
Paige VanStee's 15 points and six steals.
MacKenzie Bisballe tallied 13 points and five boards, while both
Molly Anderson and
Tayla Dillard each scored nine points. Anderson added five rebounds and five assists. GVSU dominated on the glass, outrebounding the Pride 46-20. The Lakers scored 62 points in the paint and got 44 points from their bench.
