#8 Grand Valley State swept a non-conference doubleheader from Hillsdale Saturday at Mountain Dew Park in Marion, Ill. The Lakers claimed game one 10-1, followed by a 7-2 win in game two. GVSU and Hillsdale will play the final game of the four-game series Sunday beginning at 1 p.m. (ET).
Game 1
Senior SS
Evan Morrison opened the game getting hit by a pitch and junior RF
Ryan Stimac singled Morrison to third. Senior 1B
Jovan Gill singled to right to plate Morrison and move Stimac to third. Sophomore LF
Caden Thelen walked with the bases load to score Stimac and give the Lakers a 2-0 lead.
Senior C
Nick Krstich was hit by a pitch with two outs in the bottom of the third and Thelen followed with a triple to right that scored Krstich. The Lakers then scored six runs on three hits in the bottom of the fifth. Senior CF
Jake Skaggs walked and stole second and third, followed by a Krstich walk. Senior 2B
Ayden VanEnkevort singled home Skaggs and
Kaden Howard walked to load the bases. Morrison recorded his 100
th career hit when he beat out an infield single to plate Krstich and Stimic was hit by a pitch to score VanEnkevort. Gill then cleared the bases with a double to up the score to 9-0. VanEnkevort drove in Thelen in the bottom of the sixth with a single to left to conclude the scoring for GVSU.
Junior
Owen Avery picked up the win on the mound and improved to 2-0. He yielded no runs on two hits with one strikeout. Junior
Zach Warren went the final two innings, yield one run on one hit with three strikeouts.
Gill was 2-for-3 with four RBIs, while Thelen was 1-for-2 with two RBI and VanEnkevort was 2-for-4 with two RBI.
Game 2
The Lakers scored all the runs they needed in the bottom of the third with one out. VanEnkevort walked and Morrison singled. Howard and Gill walked to plate VanEnkevort, followed by a 2-run single to left off the bat of 3B
Caleb Estrada. Skaggs single to load the bases and Thelen delivered a 2-run single to right. Thelen then scored on a wild pitch to conclude the scoring for the Lakers.
Senior
Duncan McLaughlin (2-0) tossed 4.2 innings of no-hit baseball and picked up the win, yielding one hit and striking out two in 5.0 IP. Senior
Keagan Bobbitt earned his first save as a Laker, yielding two hits and striking out four in 3.0 innings.
Estrada was 2-for-4 with two RBI and Thelen was 2-of-3 with two RBI.
