Laker Women Capture Fifth Straight GLIAC Title

ALLENDALE, MICH. – The Grand Valley State women's basketball team secured their fifth straight GLIAC regular season crown, dismantling Ferris State 70-44 in the regular season finale. The Lakers will head into next week's postseason with a 27-1 record and a 19-1 mark in the conference.

The Lakers raced out to a 12-0 lead behind five points each from MacKenzie Bisballe and Paige VanStee. The Bulldogs managed to cut the deficit to nine a few minutes later, but Anayya Davis answered with a triple from the corner to push the Laker back up to 12. Ferris State would score the final five points of the first quarter but still trailed 22-15 after the opening 10 minutes.

Once again, GVSU started the quarter with a big scoring run, beginning the second quarter scoring the first 13 points. The Laker defense held FSU scoreless over the first 7:25 of the period, extending their lead up to 35-15. After the Bulldogs finally got on the board, Ava Scanlon answered with back-to-back buckets, before four Ferris State free throws made it 39-22 at the half.

VanStee and Bisballe scored the first five points of the second half, doubling up the Bulldogs 44-22. Following two buckets from FSU, the Lakers went on a 10-0, with Nicole Kamin burying consecutive three-pointers in the middle of the run. A late layup from VanStee gave GVSU a 30-point cushion heading to the fourth quarter, leading 60-30.

The Laker lead grew to as much as 34 points early in the fourth, before a late Bulldog run got them closer. It would not matter in the end, with the Lakers picking up their 27th victory, 26 of them coming by double-figures.

MacKenzie Bisballe was dominant in the paint, leading all scorers with 18 points, hitting eight of 12 from the field. Paige VanStee scored 17 points and pulled down a career-high 14 rebounds. Nicole Kamin tallied 11 points, five assists, three blocks, and three steals, while Avery Lay grabbed six boards.
