ALLENDALE, MICH. – The Grand Valley State women's basketball team welcomed in Michigan Tech in the final game of January. The Lakers used strong first and fourth quarters to claim a 76-62 victory Saturday afternoon. The number one team in the country is now 20-0 overall and 12-0 in GLIAC action.
Back-to-back triples from
Molly Anderson and
Nicole Kamin got the Lakers off to a quick 6-0 start. Michigan Tech got within four points at 11-7, but a 7-0 Laker run, capped off by another Kamin three, put GVSU back up 18-7. After a Husky bucket,
Lexi Plitzuweit scored in the waning seconds of the quarter, once again putting the Lakers up by 11 at the end of the first 10 minutes.
In the second quarter, both teams traded baskets for the entirety of the period, both totaling 16 points, making it 36-25 at the half.
Both offenses came out firing to begin the second half, combing for 28 points over the first six minutes of action. With the Lakers leading 50-39, Michigan Tech would connect on three three-pointers as part of a 9-4 quarter closing run, bringing them within six points heading into the fourth quarter.
Anayya Davis put an end to the Husky run with a three of her own, igniting an 11-0 Laker run to begin the fourth quarter, making it 65-48 four minutes in. GVSU got their lead to as much as 20 points in the quarter, before a late scoring flurry from MTU got them to within 14 to finish the contest.
Nicole Kamin poured in 20 points, hitting four three-pointers, to go along with four assists and two blocks.
Paige VanStee posted her fourth double-double of the season, recording 17 points and 10 rebounds. Also tallying a double-double was
MacKenzie Bisballe, who had 13 points and 11 boards, adding three blocks.
Lexi Plitzuweit was all over the place this afternoon, notching 10 points, eight assists, and eight rebounds. The Lakers dominated the rebounding battle, winning 41-25 on the glass.
