ALLENDALE, MICH. - The Grand Valley State women's volleyball team closed out the Hampton Inn and Suites Downtown Classic Saturday afternoon with a sweep of Hillsdale. The win pushes the Lakers to 5-2 on the season as they begin league play next week.
The Lakers took the match by the scores of 25-14, 25-20, and 25-20. In set one, GVSU got out hot, racing out to a 12-4 lead. Hillsdale was never able to get closer than six the rest of the way, giving the Lakers a 1-0 lead. In set two, the Chargers took the early lead, leading 10-4. From there, the Lakers went on a 7-0 run to retake the lead at 11-10. The two teams traded points, but GVSU went on a 7-3 scoring run to close the game, going up two sets to none. Neither team could get much of a run going in the third set, until when leading 14-11, the Lakers scored five straight to push their lead up to eight points. They would hold off a late Charger rally to complete the sweep.
Brianna Stawski had 10 kills, swinging at a .444 clip, adding 2.5 total blocks.
Sara Pahl hit .643, finishing with nine kills.
Meghan O'Sullivan and
Kate Goudreau each tallied eight kills, with O'Sullivan adding 16 assists.
Caroline Baker had 21 assists, and
McKenzie Johnson totaled 11 digs. As a squad, GVSU hit .385 and held the Chargers to .087.
