• Grand Valley State will open its 54th season of football at home versus Lincoln (Pa.), an opponent the Lakers will be playing for the first time in program history.

• GVSU is the all-time winningest DII football program in terms of winning percentage for teams that have played over 500 games with a record of 454-153-3 (.746).  

• GVSU has now been ranked in the top 10 of a national preseason poll 21 times since 2002 (24 polls), including 18 top five rankings and 14 top three rankings.

• The Lakers are 34-19 all-time in season-openers, and have won 20-of-the-last-23.

• Grand Valley State has won 10 or more games 20 times in the 53-year history of the program, including 18 times since 2001.

• GVSU led the nation in total attendance (80,523) and average per game (10,065) in eight home dates during the 2024 campaign. GVSU has led the nation for 13 consecutive years. 
• GVSU has won a total of four national championships (2002, 2003, 2005, 2006) in program history.

• The Lakers have made six NCAA championship appearances (2001, 2002, 2003, 2005, 2006, 2009) in program history.

Grand Valley State will be under the direction of third-year head football coach Scott Wooster. Wooster has led the Lakers to a 22-4 mark, including two NCAA Division II playoff appearances and a GLIAC title his first two years.
 
The Lakers will return 45 letterwinners and 11 transfers that played significant roles at their previous institutions.
 
The GVSU defense will be led by a pair of linebackers, senior (48) Anthony Cardamone and junior (47) Jimmy Downs. Cardamone is an All-America candidate and returns for his third season as a starter. A two-time First-Team All-GLIAC and all-regional honoree, Cardamone enters his senior season with 190 tackles, 28 tackles for loss (-148), 14.5 quarterback sacks (-121). Downs is a postseason honor candidate who tallied 44 tackles, 6.5 tackles for loss and eight QB hurries as a sophomore. Junior defensive end (5) Jamari Buddin, sophomore defensive end (9) Khamani Potts and inside performers (3) Jabriel Conde, (93) Ronald Jackson and (94) Josh Williams will provide a formidable defensive line. Junior (1) Jason Hardy is the leading returning secondary performer.
 
Offensively, the Lakers return three starters on the offensive line, including All-America candidate (64) Brett Weaver. Senior running back (26) Syone Usma-Harper and junior wide receiver (7) Kellen Reed also return offensively. Look for breakout years from sophomore receiver (0) Sean Byrd, junior running back (5) Derrick Woods and sophomore running back (20) Kenneth Jones. RS freshmen quarterback (2) Andrew Schuster and (8) Zak Olejniczak and sophomore (12) Brady Drogosh will handle the duties under center. 
 
Place kicker (38) Mathew Bacik and punters, (35) Trace Hrgich and (84) Evan Sundermann have performed at a high level.
