Lacrosse Takes Down Davenport To Advance To GLIAC Championship

ALLENDALE, MICH. – The GVSU women's lacrosse team began postseason play this evening, playing Davenport in the GLIAC Tournament semifinals. After the Panthers got off to a quick start, the Lakers battled back to earn a 12-9 victory. The win propels them to Sunday's championship game where they will take on Northern Michigan.
 
The Panthers were the lone team to score in the opening quarter, tallying four goals over the first 15 minutes.
 
Grand Valley State answered back with a big second quarter, outscoring Davenport 7-1. Zoe Ziegler got the Lakers on the board, followed by scores from Gracie Bancroft, Jillian Bingman, then another from Ziegler to tie the game at four. DU got the lead back with their fifth goal, but Bingman tied it back up, then Ella Boose struck twice before the end of the half to put GVSU 7-5 after two quarters.
 
In the third quarter, Davenport tallied two goals sandwiched around a third goal from Boose, as GVSU still led 8-7 heading to the fourth.
 
Davenport recorded the first two goals of the fourth period, going up 9-8. GVSU responded with the final four goals of the game, with Bancroft scoring twice, then Ashleigh Rothe and Bingman both netting goals to put the game away.
 
Ella Boose, Jillian Bingman, and Gracie Bancroft all totaled hat tricks for the Lakers. Zoe Ziegler notched two goals and Ashleigh Rothe had one. Boose and Ziegler each had two assists, while Rothe, Ainsley Shilling, Kendra Swope, and Leah Leonard all dished out one.
 
GLIAC Goalkeeper of the Year Sarah Krause got the win in the cage, securing four saves in the second half. Kaylyn Cater had three saves in her 30 minutes of action. Kylie Waeghe impacted the game on both the draw control circle and defensively. She had a team-high nine draw controls, while also picking up three groundballs and causing two turnovers. Boose and Kayleigh Sandell each grabbed two draw controls. Boose and Elora Ferrie caused two turnovers each, with Ziegler recording three groundballs.
 
Up Next
The Lakers will play Northern Michigan at noon on Sunday, looking to sweep the GLIAC regular season and tournament championships.
