ALLENDALE, MICH. – The GVSU women's lacrosse team finished off a GLIAC Championship season sweep this afternoon, taking the tournament title over Northern Michigan 15-9. The win moved the Lakers to 15-3 overall, now awaiting their fate in tonight's NCAA Tournament Selection Show.
After Northern Michigan scored the first goal of the game, the Lakers got it right back with a score from
Ella Boose.
Zoe Ziegler then gave the Lakers the lead just 13 seconds after Boose scored. The Wildcats tied the game at two, but GVSU responded quickly with goals from Boose and
Jillian Bingman. NMU tallied the final goals of the quarter to tie the game at four after 15 minutes.
Ashleigh Rothe struck twice to open the second quarter, putting GVSU up 6-4. The Wilcats got one back before the end of the half, but trailed 6-5 after two periods.
In the third quarter,
Kendra Swope added a goal to make it a two-goal lead once again for the Lakers. Northern answered with their sixth goal, but Bingman and Boose both struck once more to make it 9-6. The Wildcats notched the final goal of the period to make it 9-7 headed to the fourth.
The Lakers took control of the game early in the fourth, getting two goals from Rothe sandwiched around one from
Leah Leonard, pushing their lead up to 12-7. After a Wildcat goal, Boose registered a goal, then NMU scored again, making it 13-9. GVSU put the game away from there, getting goals from Boose and
Grace Maddox and two saves from
Sarah Krause.
Ella Boose had a monster game, scoring a career-high five goals and grabbing five draw controls.
Ashleigh Rothe tallied four goals and two assists, adding seven draw controls and four groundballs.
Jillian Bingman scored twice, with
Kendra Swope,
Leah Leonard,
Zoe Ziegler, and
Grace Maddox all scoring once. Ziegler dished out two assists, while Bingman and Maddox both had one.
Isabella De La Cerda recorded four draw controls.
Sarah Krause recorded five saves over the final 30 minutes of action and
Kaylyn Cater earned the win in the cage, saving two shots.
Quinn McElroy caused two turnovers and picked up two groundballs.
Gracie Bancroft had three groundballs and
Karleigh Rothe tallied two.
