ALLENDALE, MICH. – The GVSU women's lacrosse team started off the weekend with a Friday night matchup against Northern Michigan. The Lakers posted a dominant first half, outscoring the Wildcats 8-0 over the first 30 minutes, paving the way to an 11-4 victory.
Kendra Swope scored the first two goals for GVSU, getting the second one assisted by
Jillian Bingman.
Ella Boose added a goal, then Swope completed a hat trick, recording a goal with 17 seconds left in the period.
Ashleigh Rothe led off the second period with consecutive goals, followed by a fourth goal from Swope.
Grace Maddox closed out the scoring, taking a pass from Bingman and making it 8-0 GVSU at the break.
An early goal from
Indira Marker gave the Lakers a 9-0 lead. The Wildcats finally got on the board with seven second remaining in the quarter, trailing 9-1 heading to the fourth.
NMU got another goal to open the fourth period. Bingman responded with her first score of the day, putting the Lakers in double-digits. Northern tallied their third goal of the game, before
Zoe Ziegler found Boose for the 11
th Laker goal of the day. The Wildcats notched the final score of the day, making it 11-4 to close it out.
The Laker goalkeepers were lights out all game, combining for 16 saves and allowing just the four goals on 25 shots.
Kaylyn Cater got the win, shutting out the Wildcats in the first half, posting seven saves.
Sarah Krause recorded nine saves in the final 30 minutes of action. In front of them, the defense forced seven turnovers, with
Karleigh Rothe forcing three of them.
Jillian Bingman picked up six groundballs, with Rothe adding five, and
Kylie Waeghe had three.
Kendra Swope led the offense with four goals, adding one assist.
Ella Boose and
Ashleigh Rothe both scored twice.
Jillian Bingman,
Grace Maddox, and
Indira Marker all tallied one goal. Bingman had two assists, with
Zoe Ziegler dishing out one.
Up Next
The Lakers close out the home weekend on Sunday with a noon matchup against Concordia-St. Paul. Sunday will be Senior Day for the Lakers, as they will honor five players for their contributions to Laker lacrosse.
