Lacrosse Takes Down Colorado Mesa Behind Strong Second Half

GRAND JUNCTION, COLO. – The GVSU women's lacrosse team began their trip out west, taking on Colorado Mesa Thursday night. With the game tied at halftime, the Lakers used a strong second half to pull away with a 14-7 win. The victory moves them to 3-0 to start the season.
 
The Lakers got the scoring started, getting a goal from Ashleigh Rothe off an assist from Gracie Bancroft. The Mavericks tallied the next two scores, going up 2-1. Bancroft tied the game up late in the period, but Colorado Mesa scored with four seconds left, leading 3-2 after 15 minutes.
 
Mesa opened the second quarter with their fourth goal, doubling up the Lakers with 13:25 to play in the half. GVSU would answer back, as Rothe scored again, then Emerson Holthouser netted the tying goal, making it 4-4 at the break.
 
It was all GVSU in the third quarter, outscoring the Mavericks 5-0 over the 15 minutes to lead 9-4. Rothe scored twice and got an assist, while Bancroft also scored twice, and Jillian Bingman had one goal and one assist.
 
The scoring run continued into the fourth, as Bingman scored off an assist from Rothe, then Ella Boose found the back of the net, putting them up 11-4. Colorado Mesa got one back, then Kendra Swope answered with the 12th goal of the day for the Lakers. The Mavericks tallied two more scores, but Boose and Kayleigh Sandell closed out the scoring with a goal apiece.
 
Ashleigh Rothe had another strong game, totaling six points on four goals and two assists. Gracie Bancroft tallied a hat trick, adding one assist. Ella Boose and Jillian Bingman each scored twice, with Bingman recording an assist. Kendra Swope, Emerson Holthouser, and Kayleigh Sandell all had one goal. Swope also recorded an assist.
 
Kaylyn Cater and Sarah Krause each played 30 minutes in the cage, combining for six saves. Kylie Waeghe had four groundballs, three draw controls, and caused two turnovers. Ainsley Shilling picked up a team-high five groundballs to go with two caused turnovers. Swope and Sandell both had three groundballs, with Rothe and Bancroft notching two. Karleigh Rothe caused two turnovers and Boose posted three draw controls.
