DENVER, COLO. – The thirteenth-ranked GVSU women's lacrosse team closed out their spring break trip in Denver to face off against #10 Regis. It was close game at the break, but the Lakers could not keep up in the second half, falling 12-5. They are 3-1 on the season.
The Laker defense was phenomenal in the first quarter, not allowing a goal from the Rangers.
Kaylyn Cater made five saves in the period and the team forced four Ranger turnovers.
Jillian Bingman was responsible for the lone goal of the quarter, scoring with 3:22 left to make it 1-0 headed to the second.
Zoe Ziegler made it 2-0 minutes into the second quarter off a free position attempt goal. The Rangers got one back, but Ziegler struck again to put GVSU back up by two. Regis would end the half on a 3-0 scoring run to lead 4-3 after 30 minutes.
The Rangers would also begin the second half on a 3-0 run, pushing their lead up to 7-3.
Kendra Swope answered with another Laker goal to get them within three going into the fourth quarter.
To start off the fourth, Ziegler registered her third goal of the day, cutting the Laker deficit to two. That would be as close as they would get, as the Rangers scored the final five goals of the day.
Zoe Ziegler had a hat trick to lead the offense, with
Jillian Bingman and
Kendra Swope each scoring once.
Ainsley Shilling,
Tatumn Nyen, and
Lauren Volk all caused two turnovers.
Kaylyn Cater finished with seven saves in the first half and
Sarah Krause also made seven saves in the second half.
