Lakers Finish As Runner-Up At Lander Bearcat Classic

GREENWOOD, S.C. – The GVSU men's golf team claimed a second-place finish in their first tournament of the spring campaign, earning runner-up at the Lander Bearcat Classic. Three Lakers earned top 10 finishes in the event.

Wingate took the win, shooting rounds of 287, 276, and 284 to finish at -17. GVSU shot a final round of 276 (-10) to make it close, but could not close the gap enough, ending at -13. USC Aiken was third with a score of six under, followed by Lenoir-Rhyne in fourth at even par. Host Lander rounded out the top five with a score of +9.
 
Bryce Wheeler paced the Lakers in a tie for third, ending at seven under. Wheeler made four birdies in his final round of 70 (-2). Ryan Gallagher and Manuel Cue Vargas both ended in a tie for seventh at -3. Gallagher shot a final round of 73 (+1) with four birdies, while Cue carded a 66 (-6), sinking seven birdies, including a stretch of six straight on the front nine. Drew Coble shot his best round of the tournament today, climbing up 16 spots to end in a tie for 26th. Coble sank six birdies in his final round of 70 (-2). Ending in a tie for 41st was Charlie Cooley, carding a +7. Cooley shot even part in his final round, making five birdies.
