QUINCY, ILL. – The GVSU women's lacrosse team kicked off their weeklong spring break taking on the Hawks of Quincy Sunday afternoon. GVSU never trailed in the game, closing out win number two on the year with a 16-9 victory.
The two teams each scored twice over the first seven minutes of the game, with the Lakers getting theirs from
Jillian Bingman and
Gracie Bancroft, off an assist from
Kendra Swope. With the score tied at two, the Lakers got goals from
Ashleigh Rothe and
Ella Boose to close the quarter up 4-2.
Rothe, assisted by Bingman, and Bancroft each tallied their second goals of the day to lead off the second quarter, putting the Lakers up 6-2. After a Hawks goals,
Grace Maddox and Bancroft each scored for the Lakers, both off assists from Bingman. Quincy got the final goal of the half but still trailed 8-4 at the break.
Kendra Swope scored her first collegiate goal to start the scoring the second half. She added her second collegiate goal minutes later, getting an assist from
Kayleigh Sandell, after a goal by the Hawks, making it 10-5. Quincy added another, then
Emerson Holthouser tallied her first goal as a Laker,
Ainsley Shilling recording the assist on the play. The Hawks tallied a late goal, making it 11-7 headed to the fourth.
GVSU scored the first four goals of the fourth period, with
Leah Leonard, Rothe, Boose, and Shilling all tallied goals, with Boose and Rothe assisting each other. Quincy got one back, then Rothe found Boose again to put the Lakers up by eight. The Hawks scored the final goal of the game, but the Lakers secured their second win of the season.
Ella Boose,
Gracie Bancroft, and
Ashleigh Rothe all tallied hat tricks for the Lakers, with Boose adding an assist, and Rothe had two.
Kendra Swope scored twice, with
Ainsley Shilling,
Jillian Bingman,
Leah Leonard,
Emerson Holthouser, and
Grace Maddox all scoring once. Bingman dished out two assists, while Swope, Shilling, and
Kayleigh Sandell all had one.
The Lakers won the draw control battle 18-10, with Boose gathering eight herself. Shilling added four and
Isabella De La Cerda recorded three. GVSU had 25 groundballs on the day, with
Ashleigh Rothe leading the way with five. Bancroft, Bingman, and
Karleigh Rothe all had three. Bancroft,
Karleigh Rothe,
Kaylyn Cater, and
Quinn McElroy all caused multiple turnovers.
Kaylyn Cater picked up the win in the cage, as her and
Sarah Krause combined for 11 saves in the win.
