GVSU Claims 19-13 Slugfest Over Gannon To Sweep The Series

Jovan Gill goes 4-5 with six RBI and two home runs

#9 Grand Valley State claimed a crazy 19-13 victory Saturday afternoon at the GVSU Baseball Field. The Lakers, now 16-4 on the year, will open GLIAC action next Friday (Mar. 21) at Parkside with a four-game series.

The fourth and final game of the series versus Gannon was a wild affair. Winds were blowing to right field at a steady 25 mph, with gusts of 40-50 mph. The Lakers took advantage of the conditions with 22 hits, including six doubles, five home runs and one triple. GVSU scored two or more runs in every inning they batted, apart from scoring just one run in the seventh. 

DH Jovan Gill opened the scoring for Grand Valley State with a 2-run HR to right center in the first. The Lakers added three runs in the third, two on a Ryan Dykstra 2-RBI single to right. Gannon stayed close due nine walks in the middle innings of the game. Gannon took a brief lead, 8-7, in the top of the fourth, but the Lakers regained the lead with three runs in the bottom of the frame. Gill walked and scored on a Jonas Gulbrandsen triple. C Brendan Guciardo singled home Gulbrandsen and 3B Caleb Estrada, who doubled, scored on a Gannon error. 

GVSU maintained a two-run lead until opening it up with four in the bottom of the eighth, all with two outs and coming on three home runs. SS Evan Morrison hit a solo HR to right, followed by a Dykstra double and Gill then hit his second 2-run HR of the day. 1B Jonas Gulbrandsen closed the scoring with a solo shot to right. Gill closed the door with a scoreless ninth on the hill.

Gill was 4-5 with four runs scored, six RBI and two home runs, while Morrison was 4-6 with four runs scored, two RBI and a home run. VanEnkevort was 2-4 with three runs, three RBI and a home run, Gulbrandsen was 3-6 with two runs scored, two RBI and a home run and Guciardo was 3-6 with one run and two RBI. Dykstra was 2-6 with two RBI and a double, while Estrada was 2-4 with three runs scored and a double. 

Edward Konow picked up the win, yielding two runs on four hits in 2.0 innings of work. Colby Phipps came in and allowed just one run on four hits in 2.0 innings with four strikeouts.
