NORTH CANTON, OHIO – The GVSU women's lacrosse team continued their time on the road to start the season by heading to Ohio for a Friday afternoon game against Walsh. After being tied at the half, GVSU outscored the Cavaliers 5-1 in the final 30 minutes to pull out a 9-5 win.
The Lakers got on the board first this afternoon, getting goals from
Isabella De La Cerda and
Kendra Swope to lead 2-0 at the 8:40 mark of the first. Walsh answered back with three straight, going up 3-2. With 57 seconds left,
Ashleigh Rothe tied the game up at three, the score it would be heading to the second.
Both defenses stepped up the second quarter, going the first 14 minutes without allowing a goal.
Kaylyn Cater was outstanding in the quarter, posting four saves to keep the game tied. GVSU got back on the board courtesy of
Zoe Ziegler striking with a minute to play, off an assist from
Leah Leonard. However, Walsh would get it back with nine seconds remaining to tie it up at four at the break.
The Cavaliers took an early lead in the second half, scoring a minute into the third period. That would be their last goal of the day, with GVSU locking them up the rest of the way. A fifth Laker goal would come from
Gracie Bancroft off an assist from
Jillian Bingman. Ziegler then scored again, followed by generating an assist for a Rothe goal, putting GVUS up 8-5 going to the fourth.
The lone goal of the final 15 minutes came from Bancroft, taking a pass from Bingman and getting another Laker score. The Laker defense allowed only three shots in the fourth quarter and caused two Cavalier turnovers to close out the win.
Gracie Bancroft,
Zoe Ziegler, and
Ashleigh Rothe all scored twice, with Ziegler notching two assists as well.
Isabella De La Cerda,
Kendra Swope, and
Jillian Bingman all tallied one goal. Bingman had two assists and
Leah Leonard recorded one.
Kylie Waeghe picked up three groundballs, with Cater, Bancroft, Swope,
Elora Ferrie, and
Quinn McElroy totaling two each.
Karleigh Rothe caused two turnovers and
Ashleigh Rothe had four draw controls. Cater and
Sarah Krause combined for seven saves in the cage.
