Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

A Dominating First Half Leads #1 GVSU To Victory Over Ferris State

ALLENDALE, MICH. – The battle of the top two women's teams in the GLIAC turned out to be not much of a battle, with GVSU using a massive first quarter to take a big lead, finishing with a 78-57 victory. The Lakers now hold a four-game lead in the GLIAC at 14-0, and they are 24-1 overall.

The Lakers took the lead on their opening possession, getting a triple from Abrie Cabana. They would never trail, as they followed a Bulldog basket with 21-0 run, getting threes from Nicole Kamin and Hadley Miller in the process. Ferris State scored their second bucket of the game late in the quarter, but Ellie Droste beat the buzzer with a layup through traffic, putting GVSU up 26-4 after one.

The Bisballe sisters went to work to open the second quarter, getting a layup from Rylie, then five straight points from MacKenzie, increasing the lead up to 29 points. The Bulldogs cut it down to 25, but a 6-0 Laker run pushed the lead above 30 points for the first time all day. It would stay at 31 points heading into the break, with GVSU up 44-13.

A 15-3 run to begin the second half for the Bulldogs, brought the score to 47-28. Four straight points from Kathryn Schmidt ended the run, then another three from Miller gave the Lakers a 56-32 lead with 10 minutes to play.

Both offenses heated up in the final period of action, combining for 47 points. The Laker lead hovered around 30 points the majority of the quarter, peaking at 33 with 4:05 to play. The Bulldogs ended the game on a 17-5 run, but it was too little, too late, as GVSU completed the season sweep.

MacKenzie Bisballe led the way off the bench, scoring 17 points, grabbing five boards, and she added two blocked shots. Rylie Bisballe recorded her third double-double of the season, tallying 13 points, 13 rebounds, and three blocks. Nicole Kamin also had 13 points, shooting 5-6 from the floor, grabbing five rebounds, and nabbing three steals. Abrie Cabana and Hadley Miller each scored 10 points.
