Laker Offense Goes Off in 126-48 Win Over PNW

HAMMOND, IND. – The top-ranked GVSU women's basketball team put on one of the most impressive offensive showings in program history Thursday night, pouring in the second-most points in a single game, hitting a program-record 18 three-pointers, to earn a 126-48 victory over Purdue Northwest. The Lakers are now 25-1 overall and 15-0 in GLIAC play.
 
The Pride held an early 5-4 advantage, but that would be the last time they held a lead, as GVSU scored six straight points, getting layups from Abrie Cabana, Nicole Kamin, and Ellie Droste to put them up 10-5. Cabana then buried a triple, followed by two more threes from Avery Zeinstra to make it 19-8. Droste and Kathryn Schmidt also connected from deep late in the quarter, making it 29-15 after one.
 
Cabana scored the Lakers' first five points of the second quarter, hitting two free throws then making another three-pointer, extending the lead up to 34-18. The lead grew above 20 points following a three from Hadley Miller, at 44-23. It would stay above 20 points the rest of the half, with GVSU up 58-30 at the break.
 
It was all GVSU in the third quarter, as they outscored the Pride 31-7 over the 10 minutes. With the Lakers leading 60-33, GVSU went on a 17-0 run, started by a Cabana three, and ended with consecutive triples from Droste and Sydney Cherney. The three from Droste moved her into fifth place in program history with 174 made three-pointers. Nicole Kamin would later hit one from deep, and two layups from the Lakers put them up 89-37 heading into the fourth quarter.
 
The Lakers scored the first 17 points of the final period, extending their lead up to 106-37. Two free throws from Paige Vanstee made it 111-42, making it the highest scoring game of the season for the Lakers. The lead kept growing, with Miller hitting two more triples, then Cherney closed it out with a layup, finishing off the 78-point win, the largest margin of victory of the season.
 
All 12 Lakers who dressed scored tonight, led by Ellie Droste, who scored a season-high 22 points, sinking four threes. Abrie Cabana also made four triples, as she scored 20 points. Avery Zeinstra tallied a career-high 17 points, while adding a team-high five assists. MacKenzie Bisballe had 13 points and nine boards, with Hadley Miller adding 11 points. Paige Vanstee contributed eight points and seven boards.
 
The Lakers outrebounded the Pride 50-19 and got 85 points off their bench tonight. They shot 62.7% from the field and 51.4% from three. GVSU dished out 28 assists and forced 23 Pride turnovers.
