ALLENDALE, MICH. – In their second to last game of the regular season, the GVSU women's basketball team played host to Davenport for the second edition of the Crosstown Showdown. The Lakers got off to a blistering start, and never looked back, closing out an 80-32 victory.
The Lakers scored the first seven points of the game, getting a triple from
Kathryn Schmidt to start it off. After the Panthers finally got on the board,
MacKenzie Bisballe scored five straight points to put GVSU up 12-2.
Abrie Cabana hit two threes in the final three minutes of the quarter, and GVSU led 26-2 after one quarter.
Davenport mounted a 9-2 run to begin the second quarter, bringing them within 17, but a three-pointer from
Rylie Bisballe and an and-1 layup and free throw by
Nicole Kamin brought the lead back to 34-11.
Lexi Plitzuweit added another and-1 for the Lakers, then
Sydney Cherney buried one from beyond the arc, helping the Lakers to a 46-15 halftime lead.
The two teams traded baskets to begin the second half, with the Lakers still up by 31, 54-23, midway through the quarter. From there, they went on an 8-0 run to end the quarter, getting four points from
Rylie Bisballe, and two each from
Avery Zeinstra, and
MacKenzie Bisballe.
Leading 62-23, the Lakers began the fourth on a 7-0 run, capped off by a three-pointer from
Paige Vanstee. Following a Panthers basket, Vanstee scored again, then Zeinstra buried a three, and Schmidt hit a layup for another 7-0 Laker run, putting them up 76-25. Both teams traded baskets over the final few minutes, and the Lakers finished off the season sweep of the Panthers in emphatic fashion.
MacKenzie Bisballe had another strong game to lead the Lakers, posting a game-high 17 points, adding seven rebounds.
Rylie Bisballe had 13 points and six boards, with
Paige Vanstee adding 11 points, four rebounds, and three steals.
Nicole Kamin stuffed the stat sheet with seven points, seven rebounds, six assists, and two steals. The Lakers forced 32 turnovers, getting 17 steals, generating 28 points off those turnovers. Davenport shot just 28% overall and 15.4% from three, scoring their fewest points of the season.
