ALLENDALE – The Grand Valley State men's basketball team took down Davenport 67-54 in the crosstown showdown Tuesday (Feb. 25) night in Allendale. The Lakers improve to 15-12 on the season and 11-8 in the GLIAC and improved their win streak to seven against Davenport.
Kaden Brown scored 21 points to lead all players shooting 8-16 from the field with five three-pointers and two steals.
Trevor Smith Jr. notched nine points and led GVSU with six assists.
Jalen Charity had nine points shooting 7-8 from the free throw line.
Charles Turner added six points and seven rebounds with two made triples.
Shamus Thompson led the Lakers with 10 rebounds, while
Cam Regnerus grabbed eight rebounds.
GVSU shot 39% from the field and 34% from three. Davenport shot 37% from the field and 20% from three-point range. The Panthers outrebounded the Lakers 38-36, while GVSU grabbed 12 offensive rebounds to Davenport's 11. GVSU forced Davenport to commit 17 turnovers. The Lakers scored 17 points off those turnovers and swiped 11 steals.
GVSU started the game on an 8-0 run off two made three-pointers by Trevon gunter and a layup by Thompson. Davenport answered with a 10-0 run over three minutes to take their first lead at 10-8. Turner stopped the Panthers run with a three-pointer to give GVSU an 11-10 lead with just under 14 minutes to play in the first half.
After Davenport took a 15-13 lead, GVSU would go on a 10-0 run to take a 23-15 lead midway through the first half off two three-pointers by Brown and a pair of jump shots by Smith Jr. and Charity. The Panthers would stop the Lakers run with a 5-0 run to cut the lead to three. GVSU would answer by pushing the lead to double figures for the first time in the game at 32-22 off a made layup by Brown with just under five minutes remaining in the half. The Panthers would close the first half on a 6-0 run to cut the Lakers lead to five at the break.
Trevor Smith Jr. opened the second half with a three to push the lead back to eight, but Davenport responded with an 8-0 run to tie the game at 36-36 just three minutes in. The Lakers would retake the lead on a Brown fastbreak layup. Davenport would answer next possession to tie the game off a pair of free throws. GVSU would go on a quick 4-0 run off a free throw by Regnerus and a three-pointer by Brown to push the GVSU lead to 42-38.
The Panthers would cut the GVSU lead to one point at 55-54 with 7:28 to play in the game. GVSU would answer by closing out the game on a 12-0 run as Davenport would go scoreless in the final seven minutes of the game. GVSU would force the Panthers to commit five turnovers including four of them coming in four straight possessions.
Kaden Brown would score five straight points for GVSU to put the Lakers up 60-54.
Mason Docks would hit the dagger three-pointer to put GVSU up nine with under two minutes to go as GVSU would hit a pair of free throws and a fast break layup to close out the game.
GVSU will conclude the regular season this Saturday, March 1
st at home when they host Roosevelt. Tipoff is set for 3:00 PM at the GVSU Fieldhouse Arena. The game will be streamed live on FloSports and can be listened live on Thunder Country 107.3.
