Grand Valley State (3-1) swept a doubleheader at Drury Sunday (Feb. 23) afternoon in Springfield, Missouri. The Lakers claimed game one 3-2, followed by a 10-3 victory in the nightcap. GVSU and Drury will complete the four-game series Monday with a pair of 7-inning games beginning at 12 noon (ET).
Game 1
Grand Valley State scored a pair of runs in the top of the third. 2B
Cole Mason tripled to right center and scored on a single to left off the bat of SS
Evan Morrison. The Lakers scored the game-winner in the fourth. C
Brendan Guciardo led off the inning with a double, advanced to third on a sac bunt by 3B
Caleb Estrada and scored on a single to center by CF
Ayden VanEnkevort. Drury scored two runs in the bottom half of the frame, but the Laker pitching staff limited the Panthers to four hits and recorded nine strikeouts.
Morrison was 2-5 with an RBI and a run scored, while VanEnkevort was 2-4 with an RBI. Mason was 2-4 with a run scored and Guciardo was 2-4 with a run scored and two doubles. Senior RHP
Jayden Dentler picked up the win on the mound, yielding six hits and two runs in 6.0 innings of work with nine strikeouts. Sophomore RHP
Owen Avery recorded the save, giving up three hits with six strikeouts in 3.0 innings.
Game 2
The Lakers scored two runs in the top of the first on three hits. Morrison opened the game with a single and advanced to third on a double to left by 1B
Jovan Gill. RF
Jonas Gulbrandsen scored Morrison with a sac fly and Guciardo plated Gill with a single to center. Drury plated two in the bottom of the first and another in the second to take a 3-2 lead. Gulbrandsen delivered the game-winner in the top of the fourth 2-run home run to left after Gill walked.
GVSU added five in the top of the sixth on four hits. All five runs were scored with two outs. Gill singled and Gulbrandsen was hit by a pitch. Guciardo successfully executed a sac bunt and after a strikeout VanEnkevort singled in Gill. C
Nick Krstich doubled to center to drive in a pair and the Lakers loaded the bases when Mason was hit by a pitch and Morrison walked. LF
Ryan Dykstra then came through with a 2-run double to right to give the Lakers a 9-3 lead. Gulbrandsen hit his second home run on the day in the for the final run.
Gulbrandsen was 2-3 with three runs scored, four RBI and two home runs, while Gill was 2-4 with three runs scored. Dykstra was 1-5 with two RBIs and Krstich was 1-4 with two RBI and a run scored. VanEnkevort was 2-4 with a run scored and an RBI.
The Lakers tallied 20 hits and scored 13 runs on the day, while the GVSU pitching staff allowed five runs on 12 hits and tallied 26 strikeouts.
