GVSU Mourns The Passing Of Longtime Supporter Steve Workman

Steve Workman Obituary

Grand Valley State Athletics mourns the loss of longtime supporter Steven Alan Workman. Workman age 71, of Spring Lake, Michigan, passed away peacefully on December 5, 2025, surrounded by the love of his family and the comfort of his home. Born on July 7, 1954 in Muskegon, Michigan to Alan and Margaret Workman, Steve grew up knowing the importance of faith, family, friends, and hard work.

"The GVSU Athletic Department mourns the loss of longtime supporter, Steve Workman, who gave so much to ALL our student-athletes," said Director of Athletics Keri Becker. "He brought great energy and fun to our competitions and athletic events by spending so much time cheering on the Lakers from the sidelines or sitting in his favorite recliner from his man cave watching online. From courtside seat #16, to walking around Lubbers every football Saturday, so many knew him or perhaps just met him once, and when you did, you were his friend. Lovingly known as "Mr. Workman", we all felt loved by Steve and it was always apparent he wanted the best for the Lakers. While he was a Spartan, the people of GVSU made him a Laker, and we will be eternally grateful for him choosing GVSU."

A private family service will be held, however, there will be an opportunity to meet his family and celebrate Steve's life on Monday, December 15, 3:00-7:00 at Blythefield Country Club. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to The Schmidt/Workman scholarship at GVSU.
