GVSU Mourns The Passing Of Former Sports Information Director Don Thomas

Former Grand Valley State Sports Information Director, Don Thomas, passed away Monday, January 5, 2026 at the age of 91. Thomas, who was known to the GVSU community as DT, was born April 29, 1934.

"Don was a loyal contributor to Grand Valley State athletics and the Grand Rapids community in so many capacities, not only during his career, but long after," said Associate Athletic Director for Athletic Communications, Tim Nott. "He will always be a key piece in the history of Laker athletics, and his presence will always be felt. Don was the consummate professional and promoted the Grand Valley State teams, student-athletes and coaches to the fullest."

Thomas began his career as sports information director at GVSU in 1976 and served 20 years for the Lakers in that capacity (1976-1996) until his retirement. During that time, several of Thomas' publications earned national acclaim. Don was a staunch promoter of GVSU athletics and battled to make Grand Valley State the athletics program of Grand Rapids. He was inducted into the GVSU Athletics Hall of Fame in 2001.

"DT put his heart and soul into promoting Grand Valley athletics wherever and whenever he could," said former Director of Alumni Relations, Chris Barbee. "Because of his passion and dedication, countless student-athletes from his era have a newspaper clipping tucked away in a scrapbook—proof that DT and his team made sure the Laker story was told. I'm especially grateful for our last conversation in September, filled with laughs and stories from the good old days. I will always be thankful for his mentorship, guidance, and, most importantly, our 40-year friendship," added Barbee.
