ALLENDALE, MICH. – The Grand Valley State women's volleyball team started their weekend of with a commanding sweep over Saginaw Valley. The Lakers win moves them to 16-7 overall and 10-3 in GLIAC play, in a three-way tie atop the conference.
GVSU took the match by the scores 25-16, 25-20, and 25-14. With the Lakers holding a 5-4 lead, they went on a 4-0 run to go up 9-4. The Cardinals cut it to one at 13-12, but GVSU would go on a set-ending 12-4 scoring run take the opening set. The Lakers led for the majority of the second set, going up by as much as five at 18-13. SVSU would score four straight points to make it 18-17, but once again GVSU stopped the run, then answered with one of their own, finishing on a 7-3 run, going up 2-0 in the match. The two teams traded points for the beginning of the third set, as Grand Valley State led 14-12. But the Lakers got hot, scoring nine straight points as part of an 11-2 run to end the match and secure the sweep.
Kate Goudreau posted a team-high 11 kills, swinging .524, while adding three total blocks.
Brianna Stawski had eight kills and six blocks, with
Meghan O'Sullivan and
Kendall Stover each notching seven kills.
Gabby Orlet recorded 36 assists, and
Lexi Armstrong had 12 digs.
