Women’s Wrestling Opens Season With The All-Star Classic and Pointer Open

ALLENDALE, Mich. – Two Lakers will compete in the 2025 NWCA All-Star Classic on Nov. 1 at Jersey Mike's Arena in Piscataway, New Jersey at 7:00 pm.

The All-Star Classic is a premier collegiate wrestling event that showcases the top male and female wrestlers from around the country. The event features 10 highly ranked Division I folkstyle matchups along with four cross-divisional women's freestyle matches. Many high-profile athletes, including national champions and All-Americans, compete in the event.

In the 117-pound weight class, GVSU's No. 1 Sage Mortimer will face No. 1 Salyna Shotwell of Life University. Mortimer won the 110-pound National Championship last year with an undefeated record. Moving up to a new weight class will be challenging but achievable for Mortimer as she looks to take down Shotwell. She is currently ranked No. 2 in the nation at 117 pounds.

"I'm super excited to kick off my last college season at GVSU with such fun and excitement that never fails to have great matches," said Sage Mortimer.

In the 138-pound weight class, No. 1 Katie Lange will compete against No. 1 Zaynah McBryde of Life University. Lange claimed the 138-pound National Championship in this respected weight class and will remain in it throughout the season. She is expected to continue dominating on the mat, as she currently holds the No. 1 national ranking according to the NWCA preseason poll.

"What an amazing opportunity for these two athletes. They're always willing to put themselves on the line on the biggest stages," said head coach Jake Short.

"We also have the team wrestling at the Pointer Open. We're very grateful for the opportunity to compete, and I know the athletes will be ready to battle out there. Anchor Up!" added Short.
