Grand Valley State dropped a 38-31 decision at Ferris State Saturday afternoon before a sellout crowd of 10,089. GVSU will continue its play on the road at Wayne State next week for a 1 p.m. kickoff.
Offense dominated the first half with Ferris State holding a 28-24 lead after two quarters of action. The Bulldogs raced out to a 14-0 lead, but the Lakers got on the board with a 6-play, 74-yard drive that took 3:24 off the clock. QB

Evan Furtney with a short out that he turned into a 49-yard touchdown.  Ferris State upped the lead to 21-7, but the Lakers drove 66 yards in eight plays for a touchdown. QB

Mathew Bacik converted the second of his four PATs. The GVSU defense got a stop, and the Lakers tied the game at 21-21 with a 27-yard scoring pass from Schuster to WR
Sean Byrd. The touchdown completed a 12-play, 83-yard drive that took 5:45 off the clock.
The Bulldogs scored with 1:35 left in the first half, to take a 28-21 lead, but again the Lakers answered. Bacik hit a career-long, 54-yard field goal with 14 seconds left in the first half.Â

The third quarter was scoreless, but Ferris converted a 38-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter to take a 31-24 lead. The Laker offense continued to move the ball, but two turnovers and a field fourth conversion proved to be too much to overcome. Ferris State benefitted from three GVSU penalties in key situations to drive 79 yards in 12 plays for a touchdown to take 38-24 lead. The Lakers drive 63 yards in seven plays for a touchdown with 1:38 left in the game. Schuster hit WR Lyne Wyche-El with a middle screen that he took 19 yards for a touchdown. Ferris State recovered the onside kick to secure the win.Â

Statistically, the Lakers had an impressive day on offense, outgaining the nation's leading offense 462-433. Schuster completed 23-of-39 passes for 347 yards and three touchdowns. Drogosh led the ground game with 62 yards on 12 carries. Wyche-El caught five passes for 67 yards and a touchdown, while Furtney hauled in a career-high four passes for a career-high 81 yards and a touchdown. Byrd and

The Laker defense held the nation's top scoring offense nearly 20 points below its scoring average and over 100 yards below the total offense average. LB
