Grand Valley State Drops 20-19 Decision To Saginaw Valley State

GVSU Highlights

#7 Grand Valley State dropped a 20-19 decision to Saginaw Valley State Saturday afternoon at Lubbers Stadium. GVSU will hit the road next week for a GLIAC matchup at Ferris State.

In one of the craziest scoring games in Laker football history, the Cardinals kicked three field goals, returned a blocked extra-point for two points, were awarded a safety on intentional grounding when the arm of QB Andrew Schuster, who was throwing a pass from the end zone, was clearly hit by a defender when throwing the pass as it sailed off his hand. Saginaw Valley State scored its lone touchdown with 3:06 left in the game after a failed fake punt by the Lakers. The Lakers scored three touchdowns, had a extra-point blocked and following the final touchdown went for a two-point conversion that failed.

The Lakers led 13-11 at the half and neither team scored until the 10:27 mark of the fourth quarter on an intentional grounding call that tied the game at 13-13. SVSU took a 20-13 lead with a 4-play, 56-yard scoring drive that took 1:59 off the clock.

The Laker offense produced its best drive of the day with a 9-play, 74-yard touchdown drive that culminated with a Schuster 4-yard pass to Lynn Wyche-El. Schuster was 7-for-9 for 74 yards on the drive. Wyche-El caught four passes for 37 yards and a touchdown on the drive. The 2-point pass to give GVSU the lead was batted down.

RB Paschal Johlman rambled 58 yards for a touchdown on a screen pass in the first quarter and WR Kellen Reed caught a 25-yard touchdown pass from Schuster in the second quarter.

Schuster completed 19-of-29 passes for 260 yards and three touchdowns, while Wyche-El caught a career high six passes for 65 yards and a touchdowns, while Kellen Reed hauled in four catches for 49 yards and a touchdown. RB Paschal Jolman hauled in a 58-yard screen pass for a touchdown.

Safety Quinn Wills tallied six tackles, DL Khamani Potts notched six stops, a QB sack (-8) and a tackle for loss (-8) and defensive tackles Ronald Jackson and Jibriel Conde each collected six stops. LB Jimmy Downs notched six stops.
