SAULT STE MARIE, MICH. – The GVSU women's basketball team traveled up across the Mackinac Bridge to take on their fellow Lakers of LSSU. Grand Valley State dominated from the opening tip, cruising to a 104-48 win. GVSU is now 16-1 overall and a perfect 5-0 record in GLIAC play.
After
Abrie Cabana got the opening bucket of the game, LSSU took the lead off a made three-pointer. That would be the only lead of the day for them, as GVSU went on a 23-0 run right after.
Hadley Miller hit a triple in the run and Cabana connected on two, making it 25-3. Lake Superior State hit another three to end the Grand Valley State run, but GVSU went on a 10-0 run to end the quarter, getting threes from
Avery Zeinstra and
Sydney Cherney to lead 35-6 after one quarter.
A
Sydney Cherney triple brought the lead above 30 points at 40-8. The lead continued to grow, getting above 40 points following two free throws from Miller, putting them up 48-8. The lead never dropped below 40 the rest of the game, up 63-23 at the break.
Grand Valley State began the second half on an 8-2 lead, going up 71-25. From there, the two teams traded baskets the final minutes of the period, with GVSU leading 76-32 heading into the fourth.
The Laker advantage grew to 50 points following two more threes from Cherney and Cabana, making it 86-36. After exchanging points, GVSU went on an 11-3 run to end the game and pick up their second largest margin of victory of the season.
Paige Vanstee tallied the first double-double of her career, notching a season-high 14 points and a career-high 10 boards, adding two steals as well.
Avery Zeinstra had 12 points, with
Rylie Bisballe and
Abrie Cabana both scoring 11.
Nicole Kamin and
Ellie Droste were the fifth and sixth Lakers in double-figures, reaching 10 points.
Sydney Cherney scored a career-high nine points, hitting three three-pointers.
Hadley Miller had nine points and five rebounds, while
Molly Anderson dished out five assists.
MacKenzie Bisballe totaled four steals, with Kamin, Zeinstra, and
Kathryn Schmidt each posting three thefts.
In the win,
Ellie Droste moved into 10th place on the all-time GVSU scoring list. She has now scored 1,324 points in her Laker career.
