GVSU Claims 5-2 GLIAC Tournament Win Over Davenport; Set To Play SVSU In Winner's Bracket Game

First pitch is set for 11 a.m. Saturday at Jackson Field

Grand Valley State claimed a 5-2 decision over Davenport Friday evening in GLIAC Tournament second-round action at Jackson Field in Lansing, Michigan. The Lakers advance to play Saginaw Valley State at 11 a.m. Saturday in a winner's bracket game. The win was the Lakers' fifth over Davenport in the last eight days.

It was a true pitchers battle through the first three innings. GVSU was hitless through 3.2 innings, but junior C Brendan Guciardo was able to get the offense rolling. Guciardo singled to left for the Lakers' first hit and Nate Logan followed with a single to right that advanced Guciardo to third. Senior SS Connor Schuman plated Guciardo with an infield single and senior 1B Logan Anderson provided the big blow when he hit a 2-out, 2 strike, 3-run bomb to left to give GVSU a 4-0 lead.

Davenport scored a run in the top of the fifth, but the Lakers answered back with a run of their own. Gulbrandsen singled to right with one out and advanced to second on a groundout. Following a 15-minute delay in which the umpires met for an unknown reason, Logan came through with an RBI single to right that plated Gulbrandsen.

Connor Schuman made the defensive play of the game for the Lakers with runners on first and second and no one out in the top of the eighth. Schuman fielded a ground ball deep the hole at SS and got a force out at third base. Goebel induced a fly-out and a strikeout to end the threat.

Mikę Morawski (7-3) picked up the win, going 7.0 innings and yielding one run on six hits. With five strikeouts. Will Goebel tallied the save after going the final two innings.  Logan Anderson was 1-4, with a 3-run HR, while Nate Logan 2-3 with an RBI. Connor Schuman was 2-4 with a double and Jake Rydquist was 2-4 with a double.
