Lakers remain perfect in GLIAC play with win over CSP

ST. PAUL, MINN. – The GVSU women's lacrosse team closed out the opening weekend of GLIAC play with a dominating 16-1 victory over Concordia-St. Paul. GVSU is now 10-1 on the year and a perfect 2-0 in league play.
 
Sydney Stone began the first quarter scoring barrage for the Lakers, as she found the back of the net less than one minute into the game. Maddy Champagne followed that up with two straight goals, with Delaney Smith getting the assist on the second. then Hailey Crittenden scored two straight herself, getting an assist from Champagne. Zoe Ziegler scored her first goal of the day, then Crittenden tallied a hat trick just before the end of the quarter to make it 7-0 heading into the second quarter.
 
The Lakers scored twice in the second quarter, getting goals from Crittenden and Stone, who got an assist from Smith, as they led by nine at the break.
 
GVSU increased their led up to double-digits to open the second half, as Crittenden scored her fourth goal. CSP got their first goal of the day minutes later to make it 10-1. Kate DeYoung then responded with her first goal of the year to get the lead back up to 10 going into the final period.
 
Champagne opened the fourth quarter with her third goals, followed by woman-up goals from Smith and Jill Dennison, which was her first of the year. Stone and Ella Boose closed out the scoring for the Lakers as they won their 31st consecutive GLIAC regular season game.
 
Hailey Crittenden scored five times to lead the way offensively, while Maddy Champagne and Sydney Stone each had hat tricks. Ella Boose, Zoe Ziegler, Kate DeYoung, Delaney Smith, and Jill Dennison all had one goal. Smith added two assists and Champagne had one. Stone grabbed five draw controls, Champagne four, and Leah Leonard had three.
 
The Laker defense allowed just three Golden Bear shots on the day and CSP had 30 turnovers, with GVSU forcing 16 of them. Champagne caused three, with Stone, Ashleigh Rothe, Elora Ferrie, and Tatumn Nyen all causing two. Rothe picked up four groundballs, while Champagne, Smith, Aislynn Alkire, and Hope Leinen all had three.

GVSU returns home next Friday to take on Walsh in their final non-conference game of the season.
