MARQUETTE, MICH. – The GVSU women's lacrosse team began GLIAC play today up across the bridge, taking on Northern Michigan. Just like it has been for the entirety of the series history with the Wildcats, GVSU came out on top. With the 17-6 victory, the Lakers move to 9-1 this year. The win also marks the 30
th consecutive GLIAC regular season victory for the Lakers, setting a new conference record.
The Wildcats got the scoring started with a goal just under five minutes into the contest. Following that, GVSU would go on an 11-0 run to end the half. To start the run,
Maddy Champagne tied it up, then
Delaney Smith added two straight.
Hailey Crittenden closed the first period by scoring with just 10 seconds remaining to make it 4-1 GVSU after 15 minutes.
The scoring run continued through the second quarter as
Ashleigh Rothe, Champagne,
Sydney Stone, and
Zoe Ziegler all scored in less than a five-minute span. Smith then recorded back-to-back assists, hitting Crittenden and
Ella Boose to increase the lead to 10-1. The final goal of the quarter was tallied by Crittenden to make it a double-digit lead at the break.
Northern Michigan controlled the third quarter, outscoring GVSU 4-0 over the period to make it 11-5 heading into the fourth.
It shrunk to 11-6 as the Wildcats got the first goal of the final period. From that point on, the Lakers ended on a 6-0 run. Champagne scored the first, followed by goals from Boose and Crittenden. Champagne then scored two straight, the second of which gave her 200 points for her career. She is just the fourth player in program to reach that mark. Stone then scored the final goal of the day, giving GVSU their fifth consecutive win.
Maddy Champagne scored five times and added five draw controls.
Hailey Crittenden had four goals, while
Ella Boose,
Sydney Stone, and
Delaney Smith all scored twice.
Ashleigh Rothe and
Zoe Ziegler each had one goal. Smith dished out two assists as well. Stone added five draw controls and both Rothe and
Ainsley Shilling had two.
Defensively, the Lakers held their 10
th straight opponent under 10 goals.
Kaylyn Cater and
Sarah Krause combined for eight saves in the cage, with Cater picking up the win. Rothe and Stone both grabbed three groundballs.
