Lakers Clinch GLIAC Title in Win over Davenport

ALLENDALE, MICH. – in the final home game of the regular season the GVSU women's lacrosse team closed out a perfect home schedule and clinched the 11th regular season GLIAC title in the process. The Lakers took down Davenport 13-3 to move to 14-1 overall and a perfect 5-0 in league play.
 
The Lakers have previously won the league's regular season title in 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2021, 2022, and 2023. They will be the top seed in next week's conference tournament.
 
The first half was low-scoring, as GVSU scored the only four games of the first half. Maddy Champagne scored twice in the first half, getting an assist from Delaney Smith on the second one. Sydney Stone scored the other two Laker goals, with Zoe Ziegler getting an assist, as GVSU led at the break.
 
Stone tallied another goal to begin the second half. Davenport got on the board with two straight goals to make it 5-2. The Lakers responded, getting goals from Ainsley Shilling and Hailey Crittenden, as Grace Maddox assisted both. Kate DeYoung then scored, followed by Ziegler ending the quarter with a goal, as GVSU led 9-2 after three quarters.
 
The Lakers scoring run continued, scoring the first three goals of the fourth quarter. Champagne started it off, followed by Shilling and Crittenden. Ziegler, Champagne, and Smith recorded assists on those goals. The Panthers got one back, but Crittenden answered again with the final goal of the day.
 
Hailey Crittenden, Maddy Champagne, and Sydney Stone all tallied hat tricks. Ainsley Shilling tallied two goals, with Zoe Ziegler and Kate DeYoung both scoring once. Ziegler, Delaney Smith, and Grace Maddox each had two assists, while Champagne and Ashleigh Rothe had one apiece.
 
The Laker defense caused 20 turnovers, with six players all causing multiple. Elora Ferrie led the way with four, while Crittenden, Champagne, Stone, and Waeghe had three, and Rothe two. Chamapgne grabbed seven groundballs, Hope Leinen had four, with Ella Boose and Crittenden adding two. Kaylyn Cater made three saves to pick up the win in net.
 
Up Next
GVSU closes out the regular season on Monday by taking on Davenport again, in a make-up from earlier this season. Opening draw will be at noon in Caledonia.
