ALLENDALE, MICH. – It was Senior Day at the GVSU Lacrosse Field this afternoon. The Lakers honored six seniors prior to their game against Northern Michigan, and then they did what those seniors have become accustomed to, which is win. GVSU overcame a slow start to stifle the Wildcats in a 13-2 victory.
Before today's game, the Lakers honored six seniors for all they have done for the program.
Hailey Crittenden,
Aislynn Alkire,
Hope Leinen,
Maddy Champagne,
Sydney Stone, and
Elora Ferrie were all recognized, and they will go down as the current winningest class in program history.
The Lakers opened the scoring with an unassisted goal from
Ashleigh Rothe less than three minutes into the game. NMU was able to tie it at one a few minutes later. It didn't stay tied long as
Hailey Crittenden got a pass from
Maddy Champagne and put the Lakers back in front 2-1. That is where it would stay the rest of the quarter.
Champagne again recorded an assist to begin the second, this time finding
Zoe Ziegler for another Laker goal.
Sydney Stone then found the back of the net, getting an assist from Rothe, before Champagne and Stone each scored to end the half with GVSU up 6-1.
The Wildcats got one back to start the second half, but the Lakers quickly answered again. This time Crittenden opened the scoring run, then Stone added two more to make it 9-2 after three quarters.
Zoe Ziegler tallied her second goal of the day in the fourth, followed by two goals from Champagne. Rothe closed out the scoring with an assist from Crittenden.
Sydney Stone led the way with four goals, while
Maddy Champagne added a hat trick.
Hailey Crittenden,
Zoe Ziegler, and
Ashleigh Rothe all scored twice. Champagne had two assists, while Crittenden and Rothe each had one. Champagne had five draw controls and Rothe three.
Kaylyn Cater had another good game in net, racking up seven saves and one groundball. Champagne nabbed six groundballs to put her over 100 for her career. Rothe had four, Stone three, with
Ainsley Shilling,
Kylie Waeghe,
Jillian Bingman, Crittenden, and
Zoe Ziegler grabbing two each. Crittenden caused three turnovers, while
Aislynn Alkire caused two.
