ALLENDALE, MICH. – The GVSU women's lacrosse team was back at home this afternoon, taking on Notre Dame College. GVSU dominated the Falcons from the start, cruising to a 19-4 win. The win moves the Lakers to 7-1 to start the year and a perfect 2-0 at home.
The Lakers got out to a 6-0 lead after the first quarter, getting goals from five different players.
Ella Boose and
Delaney Smith started it out with two goals just over a minute apart from each other.
Maddy Champagne followed with two straight, getting assists from
Ashleigh Rothe and
Hailey Crittenden. Then Rothe scored a goal herself, and finally
Ainsley Shilling closed it out with her first of the day.
Champagne registered a hat trick less than a minute into the second quarter, scoring her third of the day.
Zoe Ziegler added another for GVSU, as they led 8-0. NDC got on the board after that, but it was quickly answered by goals from Smith and
Sydney Stone. The Falcons scored the final goal of the quarter, trailing 10-2 at the break.
The Falcons started the second half with two consecutive goals to cut their deficit to 10-4. From there, it was all GVSU, as they scored the final nine goals of the game. Rothe and Champagne opened the run with one goal each, then
Jillian Bingman scored two straight, one unassisted, and the other off a pass from Shilling. Then Shilling struck just before the end of the quarter, taking a pass from Champagne, and beating the goalie, as the Lakers led 15-4 after three quarters.
Two more hat tricks were tallied shortly into the fourth quarter, as Shilling and Rothe both scored their third goals of the day. Ziegler added another, with the assist coming from Rothe, and finally Crittenden got her first of the day to close out the scoring.
Maddy Champagne led the way offensively with four goals and one assist. Also adding hat tricks were
Ainsley Shilling and
Ashleigh Rothe, with Rothe having two assists and Shilling one.
Delaney Smith,
Zoe Ziegler, and
Jillian Bingman all scored twice, with Bingman also recording an assist. Scoring one goal each were
Hailey Crittenden,
Sydney Stone, and
Ella Boose. Crittenden also added an assist.
The Lakers dominated the draw control battle, winning 22 of the 26. Champagne had eight by herself, with Shilling recording six, and Rothe four. GVSU caused 14 turnovers, with
Kylie Waeghe tallying three, and Champagne and Rothe both adding two. Smith had four groundballs, while Champagne, Shilling, Stone, and Crittenden all had three.
Kaylyn Cater got the win in net, as the Falcons only attempted seven shots.
