Lakers Take Down UIndy 16-9

Hailey Crittenden scores six goals in the win

INDIANAPOLIS, IND. – The 10th ranked GVSU women's lacrosse team took on number 13 UIndy this afternoon in a matchup of two Midwest Regional powers. The game was back and forth to start, but the Lakers pulled away in the second half to pick up a 16-9 victory. The win moves them to 8-1 on the year as they head into conference play next week.
 
After UIndy got the scoring started, GVSU responded with two straight goals. Hailey Crittenden struck first, then she found Maddy Champagne for another, as GVSU took a 2-1 lead. After the Greyhounds tied it back up, Delaney Smith and Champagne both scored to put the Lakers up 4-2. UIndy got one back right before the end of the quarter, making it 4-3 after the first 15 minutes of action.
 
The Greyhounds opened the second quarter with two consecutive goals to take a 5-4 lead. The Lakers responded with three straight, as Ashleigh Rothe, Sydney Stone, and Crittenden all found the back of the net, with Crittenden getting an assist from Jillian Bingman. UIndy scored once more to make it 7-6, but GVSU would answer yet again. Stone found Rothe for the first goal, the Crittenden scored again, this time getting an assist from Smith to beat the halftime buzzer and put GVSU up 9-6 at the break.
 
Smith scored twice to begin the second half, as the Lakers pushed their lead up to 11-6. After a Greyhound goal, Smith found Crittenden to put the Lakers up 12-7 heading into the fourth quarter.
 
Both teams traded goals in the opening minutes of the fourth quarter, with Crittenden netting the score for GVSU. After that, the Lakers rattle off three straight goals, as Rothe, Crittenden, and Smith all found the back of the net. The Greyhounds scored the final goal of the day, but it was too little, too late, as the Lakers picked up their fourth consecutive victory.
 
Hailey Crittenden scored a career-high six goals to lead the Laker offense. Delaney Smith scored four times and Ashleigh Rothe added a hat trick. Maddy Champagne scored twice and Sydney Stone once. Smith had three assists, while Crittenden, Stone, and Jillian Bingman all had one. Smith, Rothe, and Leah Leonard all grabbed four draw controls.
 
Defensively, Kaylyn Cater picked up the win in the cage, saving six shots, including the 100th save of her Laker career. GVSU caused nine turnovers, with Stone, Rothe, and Elora Ferrie all causing multiple. Rothe, Ferrie, Crittenden, and Aislynn Alkire all picked up three groundballs.

The Lakers begin GLIAC play next weekend, traveling to Northern Michigan on Friday, then taking on Concordia-St. Paul on Sunday.
