Lakers Win Double Overtime Thriller at Northern Michigan

MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Grand Valley State men's basketball team won a thriller in double overtime 106-99 Thursday (Feb. 29) night at Northern Michigan. The Lakers improved to 10-7 in the GLIAC and 13-14 overall. 
 
GVSU was led by Britain Harris who scored a career high 24 points on 7-11 shooting. Harris knocked down three 3-pointers and went 7-10 from the free throw line. Marius Grazulis notched his fifth double-double of the season scoring 22 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Grazulis also added four assists and shot 8-17 from the field.
 
Trevor Smith and William Dunn each scored 15 points. Dunn shot 6-10 from the field and swiped two steals, while Smith grabbed three rebounds and shot 5-9 from the field. Jalen Charity scored 12 points on a perfect 4-4 shooting including two 3-pointers. Ethan Alderink scored 10 points and grabbed eight rebounds, while Mason Docks added eight points and two steals.
 
The Lakers shot 49% from the field and 45% from beyond the arc. GVSU shot 27-39 from the free throw line, while Northern Michigan shot 30-37 from the line. The Lakers scored 25 points off Northern Michigan turnovers and only turned the ball over seven times in the win.
 
GVSU built up a double-digit lead at 21-11 with just over 12 minutes to go in the first half off an Ethan Alderink layup plus the foul. Northern Michigan would cut the deficit to three with just over nine minutes, but the Lakers responded with 9-0 run off three straight triples by Docks, Charity, and Dunn. The Lakers would maintain a double-digit lead into halftime with a 48-35 lead. 
 
In the second half, Northern Michigan would cut the Laker lead to six with 14 minutes left to play. The Lakers would respond as the lead would stay ahead by at least six points for 11 straight minutes. The Wildcats pulled within two with 21 seconds to play and tied the game with 11 seconds to send the game into overtime. 
 
Northern Michigan began the first overtime on a 7-0 run. GVSU answered with a Harris three. After a NMU layup to go up six, Smith and Docks nailed back-to-back three's to tie the game at 90 with a 1:44 remaining. NMU would take the lead again with 29 seconds, but Grazulis tied the game at 92 to send the game into a second overtime. 
 
In the second overtime, the Lakers scored the first four points off buckets by Grazulis and Dunn. After NMU answered to pull within two, GVSU went on a 6-0 run to go up 102-94. The Lakers would seal the win with free throw to claim the seven-point win in double overtime. 
 
With the win tonight, the Lakers clinched at least the four seed in the GLIAC Tournament and will host the quarterfinal game next Wednesday. GVSU will close out the regular season on Saturday (March 2) when they travel to Houghton, Michigan to face Michigan Tech. Tipoff is set for 2:00 PM. The game will be streamed live on FloSports.
