GVSU Takes Down Frostburg State To Finish Off Opening Weekend

FROSTBURG, MD. – It was a good opening weekend for the GVSU women's lacrosse team, starting Friday with a win over Mercyhurst, and capping it off this afternoon by taking down Frostburg State 12-4.
 
Zoe Ziegler opened the scoring with her first goal of the year, getting an assist from Ashleigh Rothe. Maddy Champagne followed that up with three consecutive goals, with all three being assisted by Delaney Smith. Frostburg State got one back before the end of the period, but still trailed 4-1.
 
The Lakers started the second quarter with four straight goals, as Ella Boose put one past the goalie off an assist from Sydney Stone. Champagne then netted her fourth goal of the game, followed by goals from Stone and Smith. The Bobcats again got a late goal, as Grand Valley led 8-2 at the break.
 
FSU got the first two goals of the second half, but GVSU answered right back, as Hailey Crittenden scored twice around one more goal from Stone to make it 11-4 after three quarters. Crittenden capped off her hat trick with the lone goal of the fourth quarter, as the GVSU defense held the Bobcats scoreless in the final frame.
 
Maddy Champagne scored four times, adding three draw controls, three groundballs, and two caused turnovers. Hailey Crittenden had a hat trick and picked up three groundballs. Sydney Stone scored twice and dished out an assist, while leading the team with seven draw controls. Delaney Smith dished out three assists and scored one, while Zoe Ziegler and Ella Boose also scored once. Kaylyn Cater was fantastic in the cage, tallying seven saves and picking up the win.
 
Up Next
The Lakers head out on the road again next week, traveling to the St. Louis area to play three games over six days.
