GVSU Defeats Colorado Mesa In Strong Defensive Showing

ST. LOUIS, MO – The GVSU women's lacrosse team kicked off their spring break trip with a neutral site matchup against 23rd-ranked Colorado Mesa. The Lakers got out to a quick start, and then let their defense dominate the game, as they came away with a 9-3 win.

Syndey Stone began the scoring just over a minute into the game with a free position goal. That was quickly followed up by goals from Ashleigh Rothe and Hailey Crittenden to make it 3-0 GVSU. The Mavericks got one back just before the end of the period, trailing 3-1.

Rothe netted her second goal of the day off an assist from Delaney Smith early in the second quarter. Then Stone put another one past the goalie, followed by Smith finding Ainsley Shilling for another Laker goal, as they led 6-1 at the break.

The two teams traded goals in the third quarter, as CMU got the first goal of the second half before Rothe finished off her hat trick. Then the Mavericks got another, but this time Stone capped off her hat trick, making it 8-3 after three quarter.

The lone goal of the fourth quarter belonged to Shilling, as she was assisted by Maddy Champagne. The Lakers allowed just two shots by the Mavericks in the fourth quarter, to finish off a strong defensive performance.

Ashleigh Rothe and Sydney Stone each recorded hat tricks, with Stone adding five draw controls as well. Ainsley Shilling scored twice, and Hailey Crittenden added one goal. Delaney Smith had two assists and Maddy Champagne had one.

Kaylyn Cater was strong in the cage again, picking up the win, saving seven shots in the process. Aislynn Alkire had six groundballs, and Champagne had three as well. Alkire, Stone, and Ella Boose all caused multiple turnovers as well.
